The fall garden is always so much fun! There are a few final vegetables that are ready to be harvested, sweet potatoes included, and there are some bulbs to plant. When I filmed this video earlier this week, it wasn't feeling like fall, but the weather has since turned, and we've got a chill in the air! I'm ready for full-on fall, and I hope you are too! I love to plant bulbs in the fall because they are such a wonderful surprise when spring rolls around! But there are three tips to make sure you’re successful! #sponsored 1. Wait until it’s cold enough outside that the bulbs will not sprout and will stay dormant. This is usually October through December. 2. Use a tool to assist in planting. I love to use @Power_PlanterUSA to dig precise holes that do not disrupt the other plants in my flowerbeds. Plus, everything gets done so much faster with li

I love something that can be planted in the fall and harvested in the next year. If you’re into no-work gardening, this is it! A few days ago, I planted my shallots and thought I should do a quick video about it! Shallots are planted in late fall when the ground is cooler. Planting at this time of the year gives them a boost in the spring for a more fruitful yield. - I always start with a fresh layer of compost. Compost adds nutrients and helps keep a rich but well-draining soil. - Inspect the s

I've been busy in the garden and never document it! So to remedy that, here's a short video showing some of my fall garden perspectives. I'm always asked how I prepare my landscaped areas for winter? Short answer: less is always more! It comes down to a few main things: - Removing the peony growth that's looking spent and covered in powdery mildew. - Removing any brown lily stalks and other plants that have no life. - Leaving perennials and hydrangeas that have dried flower or seed heads. Even though it's fall, there are still some tasks to do in the garden! I'm edging and mulching around some of my trees to give me a clean look (something I didn't get to earlier this summer), and cleaning up some peonies. It feels good to still be outdoors and working hard! | Wyse Guide

It's the time of fall when garlic is ready to plant. It's such an easy process and one of the easiest plants to grow in the garlic. I'm a huge proponent of growing garlic, so I hope you plant and grow some this year! I also had a bit of a mishap with some of the pots on my back patio. It was my fault but it was still very unfortunate! | Wyse Guide

Seed starting is not just for a spring garden! Around late June or early July (roughly 4-6 weeks before transplanting), I start to plan out my fall garden. It’s a shorter growing season so I don’t grow quite as many items. But by starting a few seeds indoors, they'll have the jumpstart they need so by August they can be planted! For a fall garden, I use seeds that have a shorter growing season. The back of a seed package will indicate how many days to harvest so you'll want to take note of this.

This week, I harvested my garlic crop! This was all planted last fall and was in the ground for about 9 months. And I'll confess: the only hard part of growing garlic is knowing when to harvest it. If you can, it's always best to harvest during a dry time so the garlic has a chance to start drying in the ground. Mother Nature doesn’t always participate in our garden plans so mine was harvested between rains. So... how do you know when to harvest? One of the tell-tale things to look for is that t

Fall gives us the chance to start over in parts of the garden. If summer becomes too hot, or too dry and it's hard to keep up, fall is the welcome reprieve. Nurseries get in new annuals that are fresh and large and we can start all over again in containers. I do not always do this, but sometimes it is fun to put one together! Planting in the fall is different from spring. There will not be as many months for the plants to grow and mature. Instead, in my Zone 5b, maybe one to two months before

You don’t have to have pan drippings from a turkey to make the best gravy. Here’s the recipe for a delicious gravy: - 3 tbsp unsalted butter - 1/3 cup minced shallot - 2 tbsp minced celery - 1 clove garlic, minced - 1 tbsp minced herbs (sage and thyme work well at Thanksgiving) - 1/4 cup all-purpose flour - 2-3 cups turkey/chicken/vegetable stock (add more or less depending on the thickness of gravy you prefer. If using drippings from a turkey, add these in first) - kosher salt - black pepper -
