The disaster in the Teutoburg Forest was unlike anything Rome had seen since Cannae. Led by Arminius, the Germanic coalition lured Publius Quinctilius Varus and his three legions (XVII, XVIII, XIX) into the swamps and woods, then destroyed them almost to the last man. Across the Rhine, every Roman post in Germania burst into revolt. Isolated garrisons were cut off; most forts were stormed and massacred. Cassius Dio tells us that only one stronghold held out: a place called Aliso, near the Rhine.
