Timelapse footage captured the Garnet Fire as it spread in Fresno County, California, over a 12-hour period from Saturday night into Sunday morning. Officials said the lightning-induced fire, which started on Aug. 24, was “relatively quiet” overnight, but that it’s threatening nearly 200 giant sequoias — the largest tree species on Earth. A resident of Altadena, California, said the fire evacuation warning in her neighborhood came too late. At 1 am on Tuesday, hours after her family had fled their home, Roxanne Cheung said there was still no sign of an evacuation warning. Three hours later she learned that a large area, including her community, had been declared a mandatory evacuation zone.
