This song was recently covered by Colter Wall on his 2023 album ‘Little Songs’, which has renewed interest in this song & my dad! I’ll actually be releasing my own version of “Evangelina” soon, as well! Follow Americana Land on IG, FB, & YouTube to watch/listen to it when it comes out! #hoytaxton #evangelina #colterwall #

Happy Tuesday Tribute! Here’s a video of my dad Hoyt Axton playing “Evangelina” in the 1980’s. “Evangelina” is one of his better known songs, thanks in part to Colter Wall who covered it as a single on his 2023 album ‘Little Songs.’ My dad originally released the song in 1976 on his album ‘Fearless’ but it didn’t chart until he recorded & released it again in 1979 on the album ‘A Rusty Old Halo’ & it got to #37 on the US County charts. Other singles from that album included “Della & the Dealer”

Here’s my pop Hoyt Axton playing “Jealous Man” on a TV show in 1981. This song appeared on his 1976 album ‘Fearless’ along with “Evangelina”, “Gypsy Moth”, “Flash of Fire”, & “An Old Greyhound”. Unlike “Flash of Fire” & “Evangelina”, “Jealous Man” did not end up charting, but the album as a whole reached #26 on the US Country music charts. The song gained a little more recognition in 1979 when my dad played part of it on the TV show ‘WKRP in Cincinnati’, the same appearance that popularized his

Here’s a my dad Hoyt Axton singing a medley of some of his best known songs at the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg in 1983. In this video he starts out by singing a few lines of “Jealous Man”, which was featured on the 1979 episode of “WKRP in Cincinnati” that he guest starred on. He also sings a snippet of “Boney Fingers”, which is the biggest hit that he recorded & released himself; “Roll Your Own”, a hit he wrote for Ringo Starr; “Joy to the World”, the #1 hit song he wrote for the band Three Do

Work your fingers to the bone & what do get? ✋ My dad Hoyt Axton & his band playing “Boney Fingers” at The Palomino Club in Los Angeles in 1983. “Boney Fingers” was the biggest hit my dad ever released himself. It appeared on his 1974 album ‘Life Machine’ & made it to #8 on the Billboard country music chart. #hoytaxton #boneyfingers #mattaxton #countrymusic

Axton wrote the song as a tongue-in-cheek reflection on how people romanticize places they’ve never actually been—because he hadn’t been to most of the places in the lyrics either. The whole song plays on the idea that you can feel connected to a place through music and culture even if you’ve never set foot there. Axton loved that ironic contrast, and he wrote it in a conversational style that sounded almost like someone daydreaming their way across the world. Three Dog Night picked it up almost
