An Ohio resident or a nonresident attorney who is licensed to practice law in Ohio and has a principal office in Ohio, who is at least 18 years old may apply to be commissioned as a notary public by completing the following steps.

An Ohio notary public has statewide jurisdiction to perform notarial acts. Ohio notaries public are required to be located in the state of Ohio when performing traditional or remote online notarizations.

Notary applicants must directly contact an authorized provider and pay the required fee for education and testing to the provider. See the list of approved providers below.

Term of Office Each notary public holds office for the term of five years unless the commission is revoked.

Once the Secretary of State’s office approves your application, you must appear personally before a notary public or officer authorized to administer oaths and take the oath office before performing the duties of a notary public.

All applicants must upload an Ohio criminal records check (BCI Report) with notary commission applications and renewals. The BCI Report must be issued within 6 months of date of application or renewal.
