To activate 3D mode: Open Maps in Satellite mode. Make sure globe view is enabled. Hover over the "Layers" icon. Click More. Click the checkbox next to "Globe view." Click the 3D icon at the lower right below the compass. 2D Mode: This Google Maps version may work better on older or lower performance computers.

Same problem here on Windows 10 desktop, latest version of Chrome, just starting today or yesterday. Here's how I got everything back: (1) expand Side Panel; (2) click on Menu; (3) check that 'Globe' option is turned on. This was never necessary before, so I don't know what the heck is going on. Anyway, hope this helps.

I found that globe view woks fine in Chrome on my mac at work but not in Chrome on my mac at home. On my mac at home, the satellite image at the bottom left of the map is titled Satellite and not Globe and there is no Globe icon in the menu either.

When you want to draw or take a screenshot the whole globe from an angle that only google maps can offer, the clouds obscure everything so you just have to eyeball it, which is kinda annoying...
