King Charles has become the first British monarch to pray with a pope at the Vatican since the Catholic and Anglican churches split up five centuries ago.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — King Charles III and Queen Camilla prayed Thursday with Pope Leo XIV in an historic visit to the Vatican to forge closer relations between the Church of England and the Catholic Church, a welcome spiritual respite for the royals from the turmoil at home over sexual misconduct allegations against Prince Andrew.

The trip, designed to showcase the unity between Catholics and Anglicans, is being hailed as a “significant moment” in healing the divisions between the Holy See and the British monarchy, dating all the way back to 1534 when King Henry VIII created the Church of England as he sought a divorce from Katherine of Aragon.
