Officials in Texas are facing mounting questions about whether they did enough to get people out of harm’s way before a flash flood swept down the Guadalupe River and killed more than 100 people, including at least 27 children and counselors at an all-girls Christian camp.

As the death toll climbs in Central Texas from catastrophic flooding over the holiday weekend, many are wondering if the tragic event could have been prevented and who is to blame.  President Trump has declared a major disaster for the state of Texas following flood waters that have claimed more than 100 lives so far.

Central Texas, with its rocky soil, steep terrain and susceptibility to heavy rain, has been prone to devastating floods over the decades.

A public backlash is enveloping Kerr County over the steps taken after the National Weather Service warned of a potential catastrophe.

On Tuesday, a sign that reads “Jesus Wept” was propped up on debris by the riverbank next to the camp.

"Camp Mystic is grieving the loss of 27 campers and counselors following the catastrophic flooding on the Guadalupe River," the camp said in a statement.
