The NBA Finals are set, with the heavily favored Oklahoma City Thunder matched up against the longshot Indiana Pacers. Game 1 on Tuesday saw Tyrese Haliburton and the Pacers stage yet another incredible last-minute comeback to silence the home crowd and take a shocking 1-0 lead in the series.

Indiana, however, won 12 of 16 games in the Eastern Conference playoffs and is making its first NBA Finals appearance in 25 years and second overall. Neither the Thunder nor Pacers have ever won an NBA Championship. Don’t anger people in the Pacific Northwest by mentioning the Supersonics’ one championship as some sort of technicality.

So … what exactly happened here, and what does it mean going forward? That’s why I’ve been trying to figure out ever since I staggered out of Paycom Center late Thursday in the wake of the Indiana Pacers’ stunning 111-110 comeback win against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
