Countries are gathering in Geneva from Aug. 5 to 14, with the hopes of passing a legally binding global agreement on plastic pollution.

Talks last year in South Korea were supposed to be the final round, but they adjourned in December at an impasse over cutting production. Every year, the world makes more than 400 million tons of new plastic, and that could grow by about 70% by 2040 without policy changes.

U.N. negotiators have 10 days to craft a global plastic treaty. Environmental advocates say reaching an agreement to cap production is key, but industry and petrostates are pushing back.
