The Yankees have had a need for a third baseman since releasing DJ LeMahieu and moving Jazz Chisholm back to the keystone. As of late, manager Aaron Boone has used a combination of Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas at the hot corner. Clearly New York, now 4 ½ games back in the American League East, was not satisfied with that arrangement.

NEW YORK − Nearly a week ahead of MLB's July 31 trade deadline, the Yankees addressed one glaring need, at third base. On Friday afternoon, lefty-hitting Ryan McMahon was acquired from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for two Yankees minor league pitching prospects.

Arriving from Chicago, Slater was placed on the Yankees' active roster about an hour before Wednesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, with lefty-hitting catcher-first baseman J.C. Escarra optioned to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
