An American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi, India, landed safely in Rome on Sunday afternoon after it was diverted due to a security concern, which later proved to be “non-credible,” the airline said.
An American Airlines flight traveling from New York City to New Delhi, India was diverted to Rome Sunday due to a suspected bomb threat.
Two Italian military fighter jets flanked American Airlines Flight 292 as it arrived but the Federal Aviation Administration did not elaborate on what was the security issue aboard the plane.
Italian Air Force intercepted Boeing plane carrying 199 passengers plus crew as part of 24x7 national airspace surveillance, integrated with NATO air defence system. The jets were armed.
A source familiar with the situation said the bomb threat towards Flight AA292, which was traveling from New York to New Delhi, was sent via email.
Flight AA292, which had about 200 people on board, made a U-turn near Turkmenistan on Sunday, diverting to Rome Fiumicino Airport.
