State officials have fought almost every effort of federal officials to expand voting rights for people of color and to increase the number of Black Mississippians holding public office.

A panel of three federal judges has approved a revised legislative redistricting plan from the Mississippi Election Commission, which will allow special elections to move forward this year for 15 legislative seats.

On June 3, South Mississippians will head to the polls to vote for mayors, city councilmen and aldermen across the Coast. While some races have already been whittled down to one remaining candidate, others are still up in the air.
