Prosecutors in Chile say the country will formally request that the United States extradite a Venezuelan man to stand trial for charges related to the abduction and killing of a Venezuelan ex-army officer and opposition figure last year in Chile.
The Venezuelan government’s relationship with Tren de Aragua has come under scrutiny after allegations its interior minister could be involved in a plot to hire the gang for a political assassination in Chile.
President Donald Trump has even suggested that Maduro successfully reduced crime by exporting gang members to the U.S. “Crime is down in Venezuela by 67% because they’re taking their gangs and their criminals and depositing them very nicely into the United States,” he told supporters in April 2024.
I write regarding the article “Skowhegan mom, daughter fear deportation” (Feb. 23). Nicolás Maduro became president of Venezuela with 51% of the vote. The election was contested as fraud, but the Supreme Court of Venezuela ruled it legitimate.
