Anthony Albanese and Japan’s new “Iron Lady”, Sanae Takaichi, have discussed the strategic threat posed by China in their first meeting on Sunday night, with an adviser to the new Japanese Prime Minister saying the meeting would be an “eye-opening” one for her Australian counterpart.

The heavy-metal-loving, motorcycle-driving Sanae Takaichi (高市 早苗) was elected the first female prime minister of Japan on Tuesday. Wearing a blue suit jacket to reference U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Takaichi is expected to move the country further to the political right.

Schroeder, who died in 2023, was the first woman to represent Colorado in the U.S. House, serving the First Congressional District for 24 years after being elected in 1972 at the age of 32. She was a feminist icon, a pioneer for women’s rights and one of the most influential Democrats in Congress during her tenure.
