A storm system has resulted in 18 deaths in the South and Midwest, with overnight tornado and flash flood warnings. Forecasters say waterways may rise for days.

Another round of torrential rain and flash flooding was expected in parts of the South and Midwest already heavily waterlogged by days of relentless severe storms that in some cases spawned deadly tornadoes.

Much of central and western Kentucky were already experiencing flooding Friday. Some of the region could soon see an additional half-foot of rain.

Kentucky remains in the throes of deadly flooding from a severe storm system that has dumped torrential rain over the state since Wednesday. The continued significant levels of rainfall have resulted in historic flooding in some areas.

A 9-year-old Kentucky boy who died in floodwaters while walking to catch his school bus is being remembered by his teacher as the “sweetest, kindest boy.”

In the hours before he died, 9-year-old Gabriel Andrews woke up before dawn Friday to catch his school bus on the last day of school before spring break.
