ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — One person was fatally shot and another was wounded early Friday at the University of New New Mexico in Albuquerque, where authorities said the suspect remains at large. They shut down the campus and told students to shelter in place.

Antonio Gomez, 45, was fatally shot in Ranchos De Taos, N.M., on Wednesday, July 16, the New Mexico State Police announced in a statement. A woman, identified as Gomez's ex-wife, was also shot and survived the attack.

It is dangerous to be a police officer in New Mexico. The land of Enchantment ranks second in the nation for the number of officers assaulted per capita. Every day, more than four officers are assaulted. Every law enforcement agency in the country is asked to report the number of officers who are assaulted.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday morning approved a major disaster declaration for New Mexico flood victims, following deadly flash floods in Lincoln County earlier this month.
