The United States Geological Survey has confirmed that the mysterious noise heard across Massachusetts Saturday afternoon, prompting rampant curiosity, was a sonic boom from a meteor.

NASA confirmed that a fireball passed over Massachusetts at 2:06 p.m., releasing a blast of energy equal to what it said was an estimated 300 tons of TNT.

The meteor Wilcox spotted happened around the same time a three-foot wide meteor entered the Earth’s atmosphere near the Massachusetts and New Hampshire border, the American Meteor Society confirmed.
