Americans are set to observe Juneteenth on Thursday, a federal holiday since 2021, commemorating the end of slavery. While most major retailers, including Walmart and Target, will remain open, post offices and banks will be closed.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed the last enslaved Black Americans that they were freed.

This year, Juneteenth falls on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Since it’s now a federal holiday, that means some official government services — including mail delivery and banking — may be operating under special holiday hours or even closed. Some other companies or stores might also have special hours in honor of the day.
