Talks last year in South Korea were supposed to be the final round, but they adjourned in December at an impasse over cutting production. Every year, the world makes more than 400 million tons of new plastic, and that could grow by about 70% by 2040 without policy changes.

U.N. negotiators have 10 days to craft a global plastic treaty. Environmental advocates say reaching an agreement to cap production is key, but industry and petrostates are pushing back.

Campaigners say a strong Global Plastics Treaty would provide the legal framework for reducing the plastic problem at every stage of its lifecycle - from its production and consumption to its waste, disposal and all forms of pollution. They want ambitious targets for cutting plastic production.
