The protections were offered by the Biden administration after the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and deteriorating conditions under the Taliban.

Homeland Security is ending the Temporary Protected Status program for Afghanistan with more than 9,000 nationals residing in the United States facing deportation, Secretary Kristi Noem announced Monday.

The move follows the Trump administration’s decision last month to not renew such protections for Afghans residing in the U.S.
