The White House is pursuing heavy fines from Harvard and other universities as part of potential settlements to end investigations into campus antisemitism, according to an administration official familiar with the matter.

The Trump administration and Harvard University on Monday traded barbs in a critical hearing in Boston over the government’s threats to slash billions of dollars in the Ivy League school’s federal research funding.

Attorneys for Harvard asked a federal judge Monday to prevent the Trump administration from withholding federal funds from the school.

The decision was announced Wednesday in an emailed letter sent from Danoff Dean of Harvard College David J. Deming and other campus leaders.
